Last night, I finally decided on taking up Cryptic’s offer of a lifetime subscription for Star Trek Online. This afternoon, trying to find out more information on Liberated Borg and their place in Star Trek lore, I turned to Google only to find many forum posts arguing against the lifetime subscription opportunity offered by Cryptic. Some citing it as a cash grab, among other things. Some people went on to cite the shelf life and the failure rate of MMOs (failure according to some as not bringing in as many subscribers as World of Warcraft) as a reason not to purchase a lifetime subscription. One person even called Lord of the Rings Online a failure. I think not, LotRO has been around for over two years now and has just released it’s second expansion pack. Turbine also offered Founder’s Pricing for those that pre-ordered the game and offered a lifetime subscription to the game for $199.00. You can now purchase a lifetime subscription for $299.00.

People also tend to forget that is simply an offer and you are in no way required to purchase it. If you choose not to purchase it, it does not affect you. You are not purchasing the ability to play as Borg, as many people believe, it is simply more incentive. You are paying for a lifetime subscription and hoping that the game servers are up long enough to make your investment worth it. I like the idea of publishers/developers offering those that have faith that the game will be around for the long haul a chance to purchase a lifetime subscription.

What do you think of the lifetime subscription offer for STO? or MMOs in general?
