Last night, I finally decided on taking up Cryptic’s offer of a lifetime subscription for Star Trek Online. This afternoon, trying to find out more information on Liberated Borg and their place in Star Trek lore, I turned to Google only to find many forum posts arguing against the lifetime subscription opportunity offered by Cryptic. Some citing it as a cash grab, among other things. Some people went on to cite the shelf life and the failure rate of MMOs (failure according to some as not bringing in as many subscribers as World of Warcraft) as a reason not to purchase a lifetime subscription. One person even called Lord of the Rings Online a failure. I think not, LotRO has been around for over two years now and has just released it’s second expansion pack. Turbine also offered Founder’s Pricing for those that pre-ordered the game and offered a lifetime subscription to the game for $199.00. You can now purchase a lifetime subscription for $299.00.

People also tend to forget that is simply an offer and you are in no way required to purchase it. If you choose not to purchase it, it does not affect you. You are not purchasing the ability to play as Borg, as many people believe, it is simply more incentive. You are paying for a lifetime subscription and hoping that the game servers are up long enough to make your investment worth it. I like the idea of publishers/developers offering those that have faith that the game will be around for the long haul a chance to purchase a lifetime subscription.

What do you think of the lifetime subscription offer for STO? or MMOs in general?

Everything seems so much smoother than Mass Effect 1, everything from the user interface to the combat itself. The graphics and animations are absolutely gorgeous and has come a very long way in the two years since ME1.

I’ve completed the first two missions and can’t wait to play some more. At least I will have a couple more days to play this before I will have to start splitting play time between this and Star Trek Online.

I got in the Star Trek Online Closed Beta through FilePlanet. Since Open Beta begins on Tuesday anyways, here goes.

I managed to get in about 12 hours of gameplay over the weekend, after missing the first key distribution day and time loss due to patching.

You start in either the Tactical, Science or Engineering branch. Spending skill points is a rather confusing process since you have both ground and space skills. Some seem to affect both, but with little description you’re just guessing. Hopefully they’ll beef up their descriptions. There is supposed to be an indefinite number of skill points you can gain though, which is nice.

I started as a Tactical officer and got a Plasma Grenade kit very early on, allowing me to use them in ground battles. I selected the science officer as my first. That gave me a heal in ground battles and a nice Tachyon beam skill for space battles. Picked up an Engineer using points and then got a Tactical officer in another mission.

It seems like the majority of missions are space missions. The combat plays much like PotBS but much much quicker. 3D space isn’t really used which isn’t entirely too much of a surprise. No dorsal and ventral shields. I’ve always wanted to do a barrel roll in a starship, no go. The amount of upgrades you can add to your ship is decent. Shield management, be prepared for a lot of shield management.

The missions are way more fun in a team, both ground and space. I never went actively looking for a team, but the teams I’ve been placed in for open instances have been great.

The local EB Games didn’t have the preorder bonus, so I’ll likely preorder over Direct2Drive.

I launched Torchlight and thought I would try out the Destroyer class for a bit. I will say that swinging around a large pick axe in one hand and a large hammer in the other is rather satisfying as well. However, I quickly got sick of having random barrels explode in my face when attempting to break them, so I went and equipped a gun in my secondary weapon set. I found myself shooting at barrels as well as enemies. While this made sense strategically, it just didn’t feel right using a ranged weapon with a melee class. Swarmed with enemies, I was able to put my dual-wielding and area of effect attacks to good use. I defeated Brink again and returned to town via the first waypoint.

I hopped on to my Vanquisher and found out I had stopped just before a boss fight, the Overseer. I defeated the Overseer and received the ‘A Lich to Scratch’ achievement. The second waypoint was activated, so I decided to call it a night.
